Deadpool 3 Adds Succession Star Matthew Macfadyen

The highly anticipated Deadpool threequel, currently titled Deadpool 3, continues to round out its all-star cast, adding Succession star and Emmy Award winner Matthew Macfadyen to the Marvel fray. Revealed via Deadline, Macfadyen joins the likes of Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool and Hugh Jackman, who will make his triumphant return as Wolverine. Frustratingly, it is currently unknown who Macfadyen will play.

English actor Matthew Macfadyen has been a staple on the both the big and small screens for some time thanks to roles in the likes of Spooks, Ripper Street, Quiz, Frost/Nixon, Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers, and Anna Karenina. Best known for playing the literary icon Mr. Darcy in 2005’s Pride & Prejudice, Macfadyen’s star has risen rapidly thanks to his role in the hit HBO series Succession. Which is currently now airing its fourth and final season.

Portraying one of several main characters alongside the likes of Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Sarah Snook, and Jeremy Strong, Macfadyen’s performance in Succession has been met with critical acclaim and awards aplenty, with the actor now the recipient of a Primetime Emmy Award, two BAFTA Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Macfadyen joins both Reynolds and Jackman in Deadpool 3, and while details of his role are being kept under wraps, it’s easy to imagine him perhaps playing a villain alongside The Crown star Emma Corrin, who was added to the Marvel threequel back in February.

Will Deadpool 3 Find the Antihero Doing Battle with the TVA?

While plot details for Deadpool 3 remain largely under wraps, a new synopsis has revealed that the sequel is "Another chapter in the raunchy, violent, and of course, hilarious Deadpool series." Which, adding to the frustration, is rather vague and does not tell us much at all about the direction of the follow-up.

However, it is now hotly rumored that Deadpool 3 will see Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan embarking on a road trip, an overall plot that Reynolds revealed some years ago following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. With the idea of a road trip in mind, many have since speculated that the Deadpool threequel could take a decidedly Deadpool-esque meta-approach and follow Wade Wilson and Logan as they attempt to leave the crumbling Fox universe behind in favor of the MCU.

Further theories and rumors have claimed that Deadpool 3 will feature several characters from the Disney+ series Loki, including Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, suggesting that Wade and Logan will be up against the TVA (Time Variance Authority). The reason for their inclusion could be due to Deadpool’s desire to escape his universe, or it could be thanks to his meddling with time during the closing moments of Deadpool 2. Either way, Deadpool 3 is shaping up to be a multiversal madness of an adventure.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released on November 8, 2024, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
